  • Floods leave Venice under water

    Water in the ancient Italian city rises to its highest level in more than 20 years, soaking residents and flooding landmarks. Water in Venice has risen to its highest level in more than 20 years, leaving much of the Italian city under floods and forcing residents and tourists to wade through knee-high water.


  • Storm planners reflect on hurricane season

    New Orleans residents board a bus Aug. 30, 2008, during the evacuation from Hurricane Gustav at the Greyhound Bus and Amtrak station in New Orleans. In New Orleans, a warning to flee emptied the city before Hurricane Gustav in early September. In Houston, a plea to "hunker down" might have kept evacuation routes from clogging before Hurricane Ike struck.

  • Hurricane season blows away records

    This satellite image from Sept. 2 shows Tropical Storm Gustav near Alexander, Louisiana, and Hurricane Hanna off the Bahamas. Tropical Storm Ike is to the east. Ike later become a powerful hurricane.The 2008 Atlantic hurricane season, which ends Sunday, appears to have attained Olympian heights, setting at least five weather records in the United States and Cuba.


  • Mudslide threat eases in Calif. burn areas

    Steep ravines below homes on Aviemore Drive in Yorba Linda, Calif., are in danger from heavy runoff from rain, officials say.Weary residents ordered to evacuate during heavy overnight rains returned home Wednesday as the threat of mudslides and flash flooding in Southern California's burn areas eased.
