  • Gustav plows through Caymans

    Gustav's rains triggered flooding that caused this bridge to collapse in Kingston, Jamaica, on Friday.Hurricane Gustav strengthened into a major Category 3 storm on Saturday as it moved over warm Caribbean waters toward western Cuba, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.


  • New Orleans: Evacuate, or face storm alone

    An Orleans Levee District employee pushes a sandbag into place at the 17th Street Canal pumping station in New Orleans. The canal's levee was breeched after Hurricane Katrina and contributed to the extensive flooding that devastated the city.Police in New Orleans plan to go street to street with a tough message about getting out ahead of Hurricane Gustav: This time there will be no shelter of last resort.  Those who stay will be on their own.

    Tropical Storm Gustav churns through the Caribbean in this satellite image taken Friday afternoon.The difference between a monster and a wimp for Gulf of Mexico hurricanes often comes down to a patch of warm deep water. Gustav is headed right for it, reminiscent of Katrina.

    Storms packing winds of up to 100 mph plowed through the Phoenix area, leaving tens of thousands without power, shutting down the airport and ripping the roof off a new college football facility.
  • Hurricane victims rebuild fortresses

    Robert Noguere sits in one of several watertight doorways of his home on Pensacola Bay in Florida. Noguere has spent more than $200,000 redesigning his home, which was heavily damaged by Hurricane Ivan, to be nearly storm proof by using reinforced concrete, steel and laminated glass among others materials.From watertight ship doors and a 400-pound main door to exterior walls reinforced with concrete and rebar, Navy Cmdr. Robert Noguere's bayfront home is now ready for the next brutal hurricane.


  • Indian villagers desperate as floods spread

    This village in India's Poornia district was among the areas flooded Friday. Villagers were eating uncooked rice and flour mixed with polluted water in an eastern Indian state, officials said Friday, as hunger and diseases accompanied the worst floods in 50 years.
