  • Gustav pounds Jamaica, death toll rises

    Fishermen secure their boats Thursday in Kingston, Jamaica, before the full force of Tropical Storm Gustav hits the city. Nearly a hurricane, Tropical Storm Gustav swamped Jamaica on Thursday after pounding other parts of the Caribbean and leaving at least 67 people dead in its wake.


  • New Orleans asks: Will levees hold?

    Repairs were being made Thursday to the Orleans Street canal in New Orleans. Despite billions of dollars in improvements after Hurricane Katrina, no one knows for sure if the city's floodwalls can sustain another heavy blow.Just three years after Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans confronts a new threat from Gustav and a stark question: Will the partially rebuilt levees hold?


  • Gulf Coast uneasy as Gustav nears

    Many New Orleans residents filled their cars with gasoline Thursday ahead of a possible evacuation order over the weekend.With Gustav showing no signs of veering off a track to slam into the Gulf Coast, authorities began laying the groundwork Thursday to get the sick, elderly and poor away from the shoreline.


  • Tropical Storm Hanna forms in Atlantic
    The National Hurricane Center says Tropical Storm Hanna has formed northeast of the northern Leeward Islands in the Atlantic.
  • Floods maroon over a million in India

    Residents wade through the overflowing Koshi river in Sunsari, 250 miles southeast of Katmandu, Nepal, on Tuesday. The swollen river burst its banks just north of the border with India, and changed course to flow through a fresh channel around 75 miles to the east. Indian officials rushed soldiers and air force helicopters Wednesday to flood-ravaged parts of northern India to provide aid to the more than 1 million people stranded by a surging river.


  • Winter forecast: 'Numb's the word!'
