  • Flood washes away barrier project qualms

Tourists and locals walk along raised wooden walkways in Venice on Tuesday after strong southern winds pushed the Adriatic Sea into the Venice lagoon, submerging parts of the city. Monday's deluge ? Venice's biggest in 22 years ? may help wash away remaining resistance to an elaborate project to build mobile barriers that will prevent  future flooding here.

  • Macedonia floods kill 1, disrupt traffic
Heavy rainfall and winds of up to 60 mph left one person dead and disrupted traffic on the country's main highway on Thursday, authorities said.
  • Brazil flood victims begin returning home
Brazilian authorities said Thursday that  tens of thousands of flood victims have begun returning home in southern Brazil.
  • 30-mile pile a symbol of FEMA delays

Spotters watch for bodies and hazardous debris on Tuesday as a backhoe lifts part of the mess left by Hurricane Ike along the Texas coastline.A 30-mile scar of debris along the Texas coast stands as a festering testament to what state and local officials say is FEMA's sluggish response to the 2008 hurricane season.

  • Floods leave Venice underwater

Water in the ancient Italian city rises to its highest level in more than 20 years, soaking residents and flooding landmarks. Residents and tourists in Venice waded through knee-deep water Monday as they navigated the city's narrow streets and alleys, and its historic St. Mark's Square was inundated.

  • Storm planners reflect on hurricane season

New Orleans residents board a bus Aug. 30, 2008, during the evacuation from Hurricane Gustav at the Greyhound Bus and Amtrak station in New Orleans. In New Orleans, a warning to flee emptied the city before Hurricane Gustav in early September. In Houston, a plea to "hunker down" might have kept evacuation routes from clogging before Hurricane Ike struck.
