  • Southeast U.S. braces for Hanna

Jim Pearce, left, and Oron Grant, second from left, cut plywood to board up the windows Thursday at the Floyd Manor House, a potential shelter, in Charleston, S.C., as Tropical Storm Hanna and Hurricane Ike headed toward the Southeast. Some Southeastern states declared emergencies and officials urged residents to head inland Thursday as Tropical Storm Hanna headed toward the U.S. Atlantic coast.

  • Some Gustav evacuees to get hotels paid for
The federal government says it will pay hotel expenses for some of the nearly 2 million Gustav evacuees, but exactly who will be eligible and how much it will cost taxpayers is uncertain.
  • Residents begin return to New Orleans

Victor Dauphiney, 12, of New Iberia, La., walks through a flooded neighborhood on Wednesday, two days after Hurricane Gustav struck. As traffic lined up leading to New Orleans, Mayor Ray Nagin decided Wednesday to let residents who fled Hurricane Gustav back after all ? with a warning the city was still vulnerable.

  • Gustav leaves behind political winners
If Hurricane Katrina was one big lesson in government bungling, Gustav has been an open-book test of whether the politicians learned anything from the disaster.
  • Bush calls Gustav response 'excellent'

President Bush greets personnel during his visit to the Emergency Operations Center in Baton Rouge, La., on Wednesday.Trying to burnish his government's reputation for handling a stormy crisis, President Bush said Wednesday the response to Hurricane Gustav has been "excellent" and praised improvement since Hurricane Katrina.

  • Experts: Conditions primed for storms

This NOAA satellite image taken Tuesday shows Tropical Storm Gustav about 30 miles west of Alexandria, Louisiana. In addition, Hurricane Hanna is noted about 50 miles northeast of Great Inagua Island in the southeastern Bahamas. To the east of Hanna is Tropical Storm Ike, which is located about 1200 miles east of the Leeward Islands. The tropics seem to be going crazy what with the remnants of Gustav, the new threat from Hanna, a strengthening Ike and newcomer Josephine. Get used to it.
