  • Calif. faces blazes on two fronts

A California Dept. of Corrections firefighter hoses down a burning redwood tree in Big Sur, Calif., Saturday, July 5, 2008. Cooler temperatures and marine fog allowed firefighters here to gain some ground early Saturday on an obstinate wildfire that wiped out this world-famous coastal retreat's holiday tourist trade. (AP Photo/Marcio Jose Sanchez)Weary firefighters got no rest during the holiday weekend as a pair of out-of-control wildfires roared across the landscape along California's Central Coast at opposite ends of the arid Los Padres National Forest.

  • Tropical storm forms in Atlantic
A tropical storm dubbed Bertha has formed in the eastern Atlantic Ocean off Africa's coast and is heading west towards the Caribbean, the National Hurricane Center said Thursday.
  • Storms cut power to hundreds of thousands
Severe thunderstorms swept across parts of Michigan, flooding streets and cutting power to hundreds of thousands of residents.
  • Bridges, locks reopen as floods recede

Visitors explore the riverfront as the Mississippi River flows out of its banks Monday, June 30, 2008, in St. Louis. The Mississippi River was reaching its high-water mark at St. Louis on Monday, and crests were still expected over the next couple of days down river. Transportation corridors opened over and on the Mississippi River Wednesday as floodwaters continued to recede at a rapid pace.

  • 117 in L.A.? Experts see hot future

Roofing contractor Art Gonzales cools down under a shower head after taking a break from work to surf in El Portal Beach of El Segundo, Calif., near Los Angeles Friday June 20, 2008. Temperatures in nearby Van Nuys reached 109 degrees in the early afternoon and soared above 100 degrees from the Central Coast southwest across the valleys of metropolitan Los Angeles and east to the deserts, according to the National Weather Service. Northeast winds blocked cooling sea breezes from penetrating a high-pressure system that kept its grip on the West after breaking or tying records for several days. A new climate model estimates that by 2100 high temperatures for once-in-a-generation heat waves will rise twice as fast as everyday average temperatures.
