  • Hanna, Ike aim for East Coast

Vehicles drive through standing water from Tropical Storm Hanna on Highway 12 in Rodanthe, N.C., Friday. Hanna was forecast to make landfall somewhere along the Carolina coast early Saturday. Beach vacationers in the Carolinas packed up and headed inland Friday and authorities in the Florida Keys ordered the beginning of evacuations there as two storms threatened the U.S. East Coast.

  • Is Hurricane Ike like devastating Andrew?

Sept. 5: Hurricane Ike, still several days from landfall in the U.S., weakened slightly Friday but still threatens to hit the oil-producing Gulf of Mexico and Miami. The Weather Channel's Jim Cantore reports.  (Nightly News)Ike is still far out in the Atlantic, but it's getting a close look from those who weathered 1992's Andrew, the devastating Category 5 storm against which all other Florida hurricanes are measured.

  • Tax tab rises when storms batter islands

Two hours after high tide, waves break along rocks that used to be covered with sand on Tybee Island, Ga. Fragile barrier islands such as Tybee Island, formed by centuries of sand and sediment deposits along the U.S. Atlantic and Gulf coastlines, have taken a beating from multiple tropical storms and hurricanes in recent years. Fragile barrier islands from Texas to New England take a beating, especially during hurricane season, that cause their beachfronts to wash away and gradually return with the tides. Yet authorities spend large sums to "fix" them by replenishing sand.

  • 495 corpses found after Haiti floods

A man carries bottles of water donated by the Word Food Program in Gonaives, Haiti, on Friday.Haitian police found 495 corpses when muddy floodwaters began to recede on Friday from the port city of Gonaives following days of heavy rain from Tropical Storm Hanna, an official said.

  • U.S. offers aid to Gustav-blasted Cuba
The U.S.  has offered Cuba in emergency aid for the victims of Hurricane Gustav and is willing to send far more if a U.S.-approved disaster assessment team is allowed in for assessment.
  • Some Gustav evacuees to get hotels paid for
The federal government says it will pay hotel expenses for some of the nearly 2 million Gustav evacuees, but exactly who will be eligible and how much it will cost taxpayers is uncertain.
