  • Tropical storm forms off Southeast

This NOAA satellite image taken Saturday, July 19, 2008 at 1:45 a.m. EDT shows a cluster of clouds just off the Southeast Coast associated with newly formed Tropical Depression Three. The storm will move northeastward along the east coast while strengthening into a tropical storm. A line of clouds extending from the Southwest to the Ohio Valley is associated with a line of showers and a few thunderstorms in the region. Tropical Storm Cristobal formed off the Southeast coast Saturday ? the first to threaten the U.S. this hurricane season.

  • Tropical storm floods southern Taiwan

Taiwanese residents walk through a flooded street after Tropical storm Kalmaegi struck the area, in Gangshan, Kaohsiung County, Taiwan, Friday, July 18, 2008. Tropical storm Kalmaegi lashed southern Taiwan with torrential rains Friday, triggering flash floods and landslides. Rampaging waters killed at least seven people and washed six others away. Tropical storm Kalmaegi churned along the Chinese coast Saturday, after leaving 13 dead in heavily populated Taiwan.

  • Bush surveys Calif. fire damage

Ellie Bell takes a look at the remnants of her mother-in-law's home that burned to the ground from the Camp Fire along Concow Rd. as Cal Fire crews continue to battle the Butte Lightning Complex Fire on Friday, July 11, 2008 in Concow, CA. (AP Photo/Chico Enterprise-Record, Jason Halley) NO MAGS/NO SALES/NO T.V.President Bush offered federal help and encouragement Thursday to some of the 25,000 firefighters working under a blazing sun to contain wildfires.

  • Lightning remains a striking mystery

Lightning reaches down from clouds in a step-by-step manner. But scientists don't know exactly how it works.
As common as lightning is, it still sparks considerable confusion among scientists.  Many of the basics are understood, but researchers admit they don't really understand how  lightning gets from there to here. And they're totally baffled by lightning's link to X-rays, a discovery made back in 2001.

  • Monsoon now a Southwest season
The monsoon has gained official start and end dates in the United States ? June 15 and Sept. 30 ? a real season that meteorologists hope will put some oomph behind their warnings.
