  • Hundreds flee shifting Calif. fire

Fire near Belden, Calif. With California on edge as a heat wave threatened to worsen firefighting efforts, hundreds of people north of the state capital evacuated Tuesday after a fire shifted direction.

  • Hurricane weakens to Category 1

IN SPACE - JULY 08: In this satellite handout image provided by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Hurricane Bertha continues to gain strength off the southeast coast of Bermuda at 11:45 GMT July 8, 2008 in the Atlantic Ocean. Bertha was named the first hurricane of the Atlantic season when it was upgraded from a tropical storm. Bertha is moving toward the northwest at 10 MPH with maximum sustained winds near 120 MPH. The first hurricane of the 2008 Atlantic storm season continued to weaken Tuesday, dropping to a Category 1 storm with 85 mph winds, the U.S. National Hurricane Center reported.

  • Fire crews try to 'adjust' to longer season

GOLETA, CA - JULY 06: The Big Bear Hot Shots crew member from the San Bernardino National Forest stops to drink while cutting a fire line at the Gap fire, officially the top priority fire in the state, as fire pushes northward in Elwood Canyon to a ridge where it is vital that firefighters stop it, on July 6, 2008 near Goleta, California. The 6,860-acre Gap fire is spreading across the chaparral-covered Santa Ynez Mountains of the Los Padres National Forest, drawing closer to many houses that were rebuilt after the1990 Painted Cave fire destroyed 400 homes. An estimated 4,000 people have evacuated from about 1,700 homes in the path of the fire. President Bush has declared a state of emergency for all of California in response to more than 1,400 fires that were mostly started by dry lightning storms crossing the state on June 20. More than 300 continue to burn. Making matters worse for the more than 19,000 firefighters from 42 states battling the California wildfires, drought is wicking moisture from the vegetation which leads fire experts to fear a possible repeat of the firestorms of 2003 and 2007 that destroyed thousands of homes in southern California. The West's fire season used to stretch from May into August or September, but now fires touch off in April or earlier, and the season sometimes stretches into October.
