  • Thousands told to flee Wash. state floods

    Rescue workers evacuate residents from a flooded neighborhood near Orting, Wash., on Wednesday. The rapidly rising Puyallup River forced hundreds of people in the area from their homes.Tens of  thousands of people are told to flee their homes near Seattle after severe storms brought record flooding to the Pacific Northwest. Storms also struck the South and the Northeast.


  • 'Sno-maggedon' has city's residents on edge

    Snowplows in Spokane, Wash., have left piles of snow in front of homes, forcing residents like these to dig out ? and adding to the tension building here.More than 6 feet of snow in the past three weeks has left Spokane residents frustrated. Tempers are so frayed that a man was arrested for shooting at a snow plow operator.


  • Wildfires bring Colorado evacuations

    Diane Panetta, a hand at the River Song Farm in rural Boulder County, Colo. readies a horse for evacuation as a wind-driven wildfire approaches the farm for the second time on Wednesday.Wind-driven wildfires swept across Boulder County grasslands Wednesday, destroying at least four structures and prompting police to go door-to-door ordering residents to flee one neighborhood.


  • Europe snow, cold claim 12 lives

    Snow covers tables and chairs at a cafe in normally sunny Marseille, France, on Wednesday.Freezing temperatures and exceptional snowfall caused travel delays Wednesday across Europe and were blamed for at least 12 deaths.


  • L.A. water cops get muscle to fight drought

    Alonzo Belanger, one of 15 L.A. water conservation officers, points out a leaky city water connection. The water cops  search for leaks as well as residents who use sprinklers between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., clean driveways with water instead of a broom, or otherwise waste the precious commodity.The green thumbs who keep lawns lush and flora flourishing in Los Angeles have found a new foe among the aphids, white flies and other yard pests ? the water police.


  • Poor in India burn books to stay warm

    A woman wrapped in woolens waits for her train in Allahabad, India, Monday. At least 55 people have died over the past four days in northern and eastern India as a spell of cold weather swept the region, officials said on Monday.
