  • 40,000 told to flee Wash. state floods

    Water from the Chehalis River covers railroad tracks, local roads and Interstate 5 Thursday in Chehalis, Wash. Some 55,000 vehicles usually use that section of I-5 on a typical day. A major north-south interstate in Washington state was cut off and 40,000 people were urged to leave their homes as snowmelt and rain swelled rivers and caused mudslides and avalanches.


  • Deep freeze disrupts hardy Alaskans

    Elisabeth Habermann of the University of Alaska-Fairbanks skis from the race trail in subzero weather at Kincaid Park in Anchorage Wednesday before the day's races for the U.S. Cross Country Ski Championships were canceled. Ted Johnson planned on using a set of logs to a build a cabin in Alaska's interior. Instead he'll burn some of them to stay warm.

    Diane Panetta, a hand at the River Song Farm in rural Boulder County, Colo., readies a horse for evacuation as a wind-driven wildfire approached the farm on Wednesday.Thousands of evacuated residents were allowed to return to their homes Thursday after firefighters took advantage of slowing winds overnight to partially contain a wildfire near Denver.

Tempers are so frayed that a man was arrested for shooting at a snow plow operator.
