  • Power Rankings: Defense has Chargers on downward trend
You can point to hobbling LaDainian Tomlinson and Antonio Gates as the cause of the Chargers' problems. And you'd be wrong. While the offense hums along under Philip Rivers' direction, the defense is costing San Diego, Pete Prisco says.
  • Don't be dumbfounded, but nobody is tooting Texas' Horn
Everything's bigger in Texas, except buzz generated by the red-hot Big 12. So the 'Horns, No. 5 in the nation, march quietly toward the annual clash with Oklahoma -- and that silence is golden, Dennis Dodd says.
  • Bay's city rolling -- as long as Boston doesn't finish behind Manny
Not that there's any hard feelings, mind you, but here's one Boston dream: World Series on the line, Manny whiffs and Jason Bay homers. Heaven help Bay if the opposite happens, Danny Knobler says.
  • Clips GM Baylor out; Dunleavy to assume job
Elgin Baylor is out as vice president of basketball operations with the Los Angeles Clippers, and coach Mike Dunleavy will assume his responsibilities as general manager.
  • Oden sinks 13 in pro debut
Greg Oden debuted to a standing ovation, as did the rest of the young Portland Trail Blazers, in a 110-81 exhibition victory over the Sacramento Kings on Tuesday night. Oden finished with 13 points in just under 20 minutes.
  • Yankees' Rivera undergoes surgery on shoulder
New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera had surgery Tuesday on his right shoulder and is expected to resume throwing in three months, a month ahead of spring training.
  • Woman charged with stalking Lakers' Walton
A Calilfornia woman has been charged with stalking Los Angeles Lakers forward Luke Walton. Stacy Elizabeth Beshear of El Segundo was arrested Sept. 18 after she pulled up to Walton's car and pretended to fire gunshots at him with her hand, police Sgt. Steve Tobias said.
  • Saints lose rookie corner Porter indefinitely
Saints starting cornerback Tracy Porter will miss the rest of his rookie season after dislocating his right wrist during Monday night's game against Minnesota.
