  • Cyclone toll rises to almost 78,000

Children displaced by the cyclone Nargis take care of a flooded area at a relief camp in Hlayang Thyar township on the outskirts of Yangon on May 16, 2008. Children in cyclone-hit Myanmar who are sleeping on the streets without adult protection are at risk of not only diseases but also sexual abuse, a UNICEF spokeswoman warned on May 16,2008. AFP PHOTO/Khin Maung Win (Photo credit should read KHIN MAUNG WIN/AFP/Getty Images)The official death toll nearly doubled to 78,000 from Myanmar?s killer cyclone as heavy rains on Friday lashed much of the area stricken two weeks ago, further hampering relief efforts.

  • Los Angeles unveils drought plan

LONE PINE, CA - MAY 09: The Los Angeles Aqueduct carries water from the snowcapped Sierra Nevada Mountains, which carry less snow than normal, to major urban areas of southern California on May 9, 2008 near Lone Pine, California. Urgent calls for California residents to conserve water have grown in the wake of the final Sierras snow survey of the season indicating a snow depth and water content at only 67 percent of normal levels. The Sierra snowpack is vital to California water supplies and officials are preparing plans for mandatory water conservation. In Southern California, the Metropolitan Water District, cut deliveries to farmers by nearly a third and growers in Fresno and Kings counties have not planted about 200,000 acres of crops, a third of the land irrigated by Westlands Water District. Many farmers are now selling their government-subsidized water for profit instead of using it to plant crops. Much of the California water supply comes from the Colorado River where a continuing eight-year drought has lowered water storage to roughly half of capacity. Dry conditions across the West have already doubled the wildfires this year causing fire officials to brace for a possible repeat of the devastating 2007 southern California wildfire season. Faced with drought and a jump in consumption, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has called for cleansing sewage for drinking water and imposing watering restrictions.

  • Dry Barcelona forced to ship in water

The "Sichem Defender" arrives at Barcelona harbour with a cargo of drinking water on May 13, 2008. Spain's regional government of Catalonia began the transfer of potable water from nearby Ebro river and water tanks in Tarragona to fight the severe drought hitting the region. Spain's worst drought in decades forced the city of Barcelona to literally start shipping in drinking water this week.

  • Storms hit soggy Louisiana, camper killed

Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Adam Kinslow carries a roll of police tape as he walks past one of the trees on the Capitol grounds uprooted by an early-morning storm Thursday, May 15, 2008, in Austin, Texas. Severe storms overnight in Austin knocked down several large trees at the state Capitol and blew out windows in the dome. Severe storms with damaging winds and possible tornadoes pounded the South, killing at least one person in Louisiana and shattering windows at the Texas Capitol.

  • Firefighters get upper hand on Fla. wildfire

Dry, windy conditions fuel several wildfires along the state?s Atlantic coast.Firefighters made major gains against a wildfire that has charred thousands of acres along the Atlantic coast as police questioned a man seen tossing a Molotov cocktail into nearby woods.
