Pedro Villarreal, 53, left, and his niece Lorena Medina, 36, rummage through the ashes of their belongings on Wednesday. Their home was destroyed by a wildfire in the Lake View Terrace section of Los Angeles.A respite in Santa Ana winds allowed firefighters to beat back flames that continued to whirl dangerously close to homes Wednesday morning along the northwestern suburbs of Los Angeles.

  • Southeast told more water wars ahead
South Carolina's attorney general predicted future water wars in the Southeast and said a lawsuit South Carolina brought against North Carolina will set a precedent for settling the disputes.
  • Bush, Clinton tour Ike damage
