  • Hanna set to soak East Coast

Greg and Dottie Houde install hurricane shutters on their optical shop in Morehead City, N.C., on Friday in preparation for Tropical Storm Hanna. Beach vacationers in the Carolinas packed up and headed inland Friday as Tropical Storm Hanna cruised steadily toward the coast, while others decided to ride out the fast-moving storm that had only a slight chance to become a small hurricane before crashing ashore overnight.

  • Corpses surface in Haiti as floods recede

The Red Cross released this photo Friday showing some of the flooded areas of Gonaives, Haiti's second-largest city.Corpses surfaced in the muddy wreckage of a flooded Haitian city Friday as floodwaters receded after Tropical Storm Hanna, raising the known death toll to 137. Many more likely perished.

  • U.S. offers aid to Gustav-blasted Cuba
The U.S.  has offered Cuba in emergency aid for the victims of Hurricane Gustav and is willing to send far more if a U.S.-approved disaster assessment team is allowed in for assessment.
  • Some Gustav evacuees to get hotels paid for
The federal government says it will pay hotel expenses for some of the nearly 2 million Gustav evacuees, but exactly who will be eligible and how much it will cost taxpayers is uncertain.
  • Experts: Conditions primed for storms

This NOAA satellite image taken Tuesday shows Tropical Storm Gustav about 30 miles west of Alexandria, Louisiana. In addition, Hurricane Hanna is noted about 50 miles northeast of Great Inagua Island in the southeastern Bahamas. To the east of Hanna is Tropical Storm Ike, which is located about 1200 miles east of the Leeward Islands. The tropics seem to be going crazy what with the remnants of Gustav, the new threat from Hanna, a strengthening Ike and newcomer Josephine. Get used to it.
