El Dorado County Tour & Travel

Brief History

Aptly named after the rush of 200,000 people looking to find instant riches, El Dorado County was sparked by the Gold Rush. Rivers once used for panning are now used for whitewater activities such as rafting. After the Gold Rush had ended, many stayed behind to farm the land. Eventually El Dorado County came to be known for its recreational activities, old time charm, majestic views, and more recently, its’ fine wines.

Our Recommendations

Wineries & Breweries

Welcome to the new wine hub of California. The excellent growing conditions, good drainage, & minerals add to the distinct characteristic of the wines produced in this area. So, book plenty of time to enjoy your wine, while taking in the majestic scenery. However, we recommend that you book a tour, enjoy our wines and leave the driving to someone else. See our transportation services for more information.

Many of the vineyards also have amenities for special events and weddings.

Agriculture

While you are in El Dorado County, don’t miss the opportunity to visit the local farms, orchards and ranches for crafts and fun for all! Friendly faces will greet you at farms producing fruit, bonsai, veggies, and flowers. Many have activities for the kids too! During the fall, you will find Apple Hill is open, with not only every type of way to enjoy an apple, but events and local crafters as well.

Take in some Golden California History

Find out why so many stormed California in hopes of finding instant fortune, the tools they invented, and how the lived and introduced new cultures to an area once inhabited solely by the local American Indian tribes.

In Coloma, you will find mills, Chinese living quarters, tools and other inventions, as well as real gold panning, picnic areas, and swimming opportunities. Plan some time to visit a few of the many museums open to the public, such as Gold Bug Park, Marshall Historic State Park, El Dorado County Historical Museum, Fountain and Tallman Soda Factory.

Outdoor Recreation

Locals and visitors alike flock to various destinations within El Dorado County for white water rafting and skiing. But, did you know that there are many other activities the Sierras have to offer? Consider the possibilities: hiking, camping, 4-wheeling, snowmobiling, sailing, and golfing, bike and horse trails, kayak or canoeing.

Add some adventure to your next vacation!

Shopping

What’s your shopping personality? In Historic Hangtown, Placerville, you can find specialty clothing, candy, antique shops, and much, much more! Also you can find the latest ski trends in Tahoe, or upscale shopping in El Dorado Hills. Whatever it is, you’re bound to find it!
